Job Summary:

The Adaptive Technology (AT) Team at McBurney Disability Resource Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison provides adaptive technology accommodations (alternative formats, notetaking, furniture, and other adaptive technologies) to eligible students with disabilities. This collaborative and supportive team consists of staff from a variety of professional backgrounds who continuously work to develop new processes and implement new tools to improve production, adapt to changes in education, and modernize access for students.

This position will have responsibilities in alternative formats, furniture, and/or notetaking accommodations, with both behind-the-scenes and direct service work. As the Accessible Learning Technology Coordinator, you would be:

- Establishing workflows to provide assistive/adaptive accommodations (alt formats, furniture, and notetaking), and converting print materials and other instructional materials from a variety of subject areas (from humanities to STEM/STEAM, and from undergrad to professional and graduate level) into accessible formats.
- Monitoring requests and deadlines to make sure accommodations are delivered on-time.
- Providing consultation for students to determine the most appropriate AT accommodations.
- Conducting consultation and training for faculty/instructors to identify course materials, establish workflows for converting their materials, and encourage them to create accessible instructional materials where possible.
- Maintaining and developing training materials for students with alternative formats accommodations, as well as resources for students, staff, and instructors for adaptive technology and creation of accessible content.
- Supervising a team of student workers who are processing requests and converting materials.
- Providing in-person/remote trainings for adaptive technology tools/request processes and general accommodations processes.

- Versatile and comfortable working with a variety of technology and in a variety of areas, as the work changes throughout the year and from year to year.
- Very comfortable working with and learning new technology.
- Motivated to leverage and grow skills and knowledge related to accessibility, assistive technology, disability, information/educational technologies, and project management.
- Interested in supervising student workers.

Responsibilities:

Plans logistics for and converts instructional materials into alternative formats to provide access for individuals with disabilities. May assist with supervision and training of staff and end users to use converted materials.
  • 20% Converts materials (print, electronic documents, video, and/or audio) into alternative formats by utilizing technological mediums and various strategies
  • 20% Selects and implements technology solutions, and develop and updates processes
  • 20% Monitors deadlines and work flow processes to ensure delivery of services
  • 20% Tests, troubleshoots, and resolves issues post-implementation
  • 15% Leads in-person and remote accommodation consultations and trainings for students with assistive/adaptive technology accommodations
  • 5% Provides backup to Accessible Learning Technology Coordinator (ALTC) staff and adaptive technology areas

Tasks:

  • Convert and coordinate the production of converting course materials to accessible formats (e-text, audio, Braille, large print, and tactile graphics) for students, in conjunction with team of professional staff and student workers.
  • Consult with faculty/instructors to determine the accessibility of textbooks, course materials, and learning technologies used in their courses; develop workflow plans; provide trainings; and monitor learning management system (LMS) course content.
  • Assist in furniture and notetaking accommodations; to include, processing requests and ensuring accommodations are provided in a timely manner.
  • Consult and train students receiving accommodations on assistive/adaptive technology, including using, customizing, and troubleshooting related accessible and adaptive technologies.
  • Consult with students and Access Consultants to determine the most appropriate assistive/adaptive technology accommodation, and then implement the accommodation.
  • Hire, train, supervise, delegate to, and provide professional development opportunities for student workers in the adaptive technology area.
  • Track requests and document interactions with students in Center's database.
  • Maintain current skills and knowledge in adaptive technology accommodations and best practices.
  • Provide support in all assistive/alternative technology areas (Alt Formats, Furniture, Notetaking) as workload changes and as needed.
  • Participate in Student Affairs and McBurney Center activities to support all students on campus and develop personal growth.

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree

Preferred Degree in adaptive/assistive technology, occupational therapy (OT), rehabilitation psychology, education, educational/instructional technology, instructional design, audio or video production, curriculum & instruction, information technology, library and information sciences, speech & language pathology, disability-related field, or bachelor's degree coupled with related experience.

Qualifications:

Required Experience:
- Experience working with people with disabilities and/or applying knowledge of the disability barriers experienced in an educational environment to determine appropriate accommodations.
- Experience with troubleshooting hardware, software, and/or adaptive technology that students use to access their alternative formats and staff use to create accessible formats.
- Experience delivering high-quality services on a timeline, while balancing immediate needs and managing deadlines.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical users.
- Experience and understanding of access as it relates to working with students with disabilities in an educational setting.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experiences:
- Experience working with assistive/adaptive technology, alternative formats, and/or instructional/educational technology.
- Experience in the field of assistive/adaptive technology accommodations and accessibility in higher education.
- Experience with creating Braille and/or tactile graphics.
- Experience working with digital accessibility and/or universal design principles in instruction/technology.
- Experience in areas of learning disabilities, mental health, ADHD, and/or chronic health.
- Knowledge of disability rights and disability culture.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location upon supervisor and department/Student Affairs division approval.

The expected minimum starting salary for this position is $60,000.00 annually. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.
