Are you looking for an opportunity to make an impact on Wisconsin’s infrastructure? Join the Bureau of Structures as a Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Engineer to manage the maintenance of bridges and transportation related structures throughout the Southeast Region of Wisconsin!

The WI Department of Transportation (WisDOT), Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) is seeking an interested and qualified individual to fill a Structural Engineer Transportation Senior or Advancedposition in the Bureau of Structures.

This full-time position is headquartered in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

This position offers a hybridized work schedule. The position will be headquartered at and required to work from the DTSD Regional State Office Building in Waukesha, WI at least two days per week. All employees working a hybrid work schedule are generally expected to telework from within the State of Wisconsin. This topic will be discussed more at the time of the interview.

Position Summary
This position serves as an engineer for the structure inspection and maintenance program located in the Southeast Region. Under general supervision, this position individually or as a member of a team performs routine up to complex professional engineering duties in implementing the region’s planned bridge maintenance program. This position conducts bridge inspections; prepares bridge inspection reports; and recommends maintenance needs and repairs for preventative maintenance and emergency repair. This position works directly with county staff and private contractors to ensure structure maintenance and repairs are performed satisfactorily.

Salary Information
At the senior level, this position is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $82,846 – $101,421, plus excellent benefits. 

At the advanced level, this position is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $96,387 – $108,950, plus excellent benefits. 

Plus, an additional $2,080 per year for a Professional Engineer (PE) License.

A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Job Details
This position requires the ability to frequently travel on an independent basis to project sites within the region to conduct inspections and meet with local units of government.

This position requires fieldwork. This fieldwork can include working in all seasons, including adverse weather conditions and working in high volume traffic conditions, bending on a limited basis, and lifting approximately 40 lbs. and carrying this load approximately 50 feet over varying terrain.

Bridge Inspector Special Requirements

Certified Bridge Inspector per WisDOT Structure Inspection Manual. (Not required at the time of hire. WisDOT will support the training for the selected candidate to obtain the bridge inspector certification.)

Ability to frequently travel on an independent basis, such as traveling 3 to 5 days a week to multiple locations in one day.

Ability to work outdoors in conditions of heat, cold, humidity, dust, and to walk over rough terrain.

Ability to lift and carry objects, such as tools or materials.

Ability to work outside of normal working hours.

Ability to work in high volume traffic conditions.

Ability to work in or near water, including safely working from a boat.

Bridge inspection requires a level of physical agility and strength, plus the ability to work at heights up to several hundred feet above ground level safely. Access to inspection areas is gained by entering small access hatches and climbing or descending ladders and also requires crawling on beams and piers. Safety equipment including harnesses may be required. Some inspections require entering and riding in a special bucket suspended underneath the structure from a hydraulic boom on special bridge inspection machines known as a “Snooper” and “Reach-All”.

Qualifications
Minimum requirement: Upon application, candidate must have graduated from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) ABET accredited college or university with a 4-year bachelor’s degree (or master’s or PhD) in engineering OR have graduated from an Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) accredited college AND hold an Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate OR possess a PE license (registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Wisconsin OR a valid Professional Engineering registration and be able to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state).

Additionally, to be eligible at the Senior level, candidates must have:

At least 3.5 years of engineering experience after receiving their engineering degree from an accredited college or university.

With at least 1 year of experience in design, construction, maintenance, and/or inspection of transportation structures (structures are defined as bridges, culverts, sound walls, retaining walls, or sign bridges).

To be eligible at the Advanced level, candidates must have a valid Professional Engineering (PE) registration and the ability to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state.
