Job Description

Shawn Bozarth, sales manager — strategic business at EES, introducing the class project to sophomore engineering students in Engineering Practice I.From their first semester through senior year, Carthage engineering students engage in projects that combine technical learning with industry partnerships.

This fall, students are advancing their skills through four classroom collaborations and a range of professional opportunities, from recruitment events to guest lectures and Lunch and Learn events.

First-Year Projects: Motors and Tradeoffs with InSinkErator
First-year students in Introduction to Engineering Design taught by professors Jessica Lavorata and Murat Dinc are working with InSinkErator, the world’s leading manufacturer of in-sink waste disposal units, to evaluate tradeoffs between permanent magnet motors and single-phase motors. Students are weighing factors such as manufacturing complexity, cost, recyclability, marketing appeal, and performance. Each of those considerations is important in modern product development.

Sophomore Projects: Linear Actuators and Medical Devices with EES
Sophomores in Engineering Practice I, also a course taught by Prof. Lavorata and Prof. Dinc, are teaming up with Expert Engineering Solutions (EES) to explore linear actuator technology and its potential application in medical devices. The project challenges students to think about precision, reliability, and user needs in healthcare innovation.

Senior Thesis Projects: Theatre Tech and Smart Packaging
Seniors in the B.A. in Engineering Science Senior Thesis course taught by Professor Ross Crowley are tackling one of two thesis-style projects. Some are partnering with the Carthage Theatre Department to design and build set pieces for the world premiere of “Bluebird.” This collaboration blends engineering skills with the creative demands of live performance. Others are working with Nosco, a leader in packaging solutions, to explore the integration of RFID technology into printed labels and flexible packaging. Their objective is to establish design procedures that Nosco can share with clients across industries.

Opportunities Beyond the Classroom: Recruitment, Guest Speakers, and Internships
Sprinkled throughout the semester are many chances for students to engage with the engineering community. On Tuesday, Sept. 30, students will share their experiences from fabulous summer internships with organizations such as Andis, NASA, AbbVie, Boston Scientific, and Bechtel during a panel discussion. STEM recruitment tables are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23 and Thursday, Nov. 13. Upcoming Lunch and Learns include: InsulTech, which provides custom thermal and acoustic insulation solutions for industries like aerospace, transportation, and defense; and R+D Automation, which specializes in designing automation machinery for the life sciences sector (pharma, medical devices, biotech) including assembly, filling, testing, labeling, and packaging systems. Students will also benefit from a guest lecture by Thornton Tomasetti, a global engineering consulting firm known for structural and façade engineering, advanced simulation and modeling, sustainability, resilience, and protective design through its internal research and development efforts.
