Job Description

Education Attorney: Juvenile Delinquency Program

  • Interview families involved in the JD program to ascertain school issues, educate regarding applicable education laws and regulations, propose solutions to school issues, and create an action plan to address those issues.
  • Advise clients as to legal rights regarding education and school disciplinary matters.
  • Coordinate with the Suffolk County Probation Department and LIAC advocates to implement the plan.
  • Appear in Family Court to discuss progress with the created case plan and provide regular updates and advice that address the juvenile’s educational issues.
  • Represent clients at Superintendent Hearings, Impartial Hearings, and Mediation as appropriate.
  • Represent and assist families in written appeals to the Commissioner of Education.
  • Coordinate and speaks with School District Attorneys.
  • Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for individuals and families.
  • Confer with colleagues who specialize in education law to establish and verify basis for legal proceedings.
  • Maintain statistics to produce periodic required reports to satisfy grant funding requirements.
  • Provide information and referral services for clients seeking assistance and/or legal representation for matters not related to education law.
  • Provide technical assistance to all education advocates.
  • Participate in conferences, workshops, and informational sessions regarding special education and trends in education law.
  • Provide training in education rights to students, parents, and professionals.
  • Conduct community outreach through speaking engagements and the distribution of agency materials.


Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate Degree with at least one year experience practicing education law or related (ie family law, disability law, civil rights law).
  • Admission to the New York State Bar.
  • Strong interest in advocating for the rights of students.
  • Valid driver's license.

This is a Part Time position (20 hours/week). Salary range is $35,000-$40,000 with a generous benefits package, after a probationary period, including: paid time off, sick leave, and a 403(b) Thrift Plan with employer matched contributions up to 5%.
