Duties
- Perform administrative and support functions as necessary to maintain analytical service.
- Acquire and maintain analytical proficiency in forensic biology analysis.
- Maintain effective communication with the scientific and criminal justice communities and Department personnel.
- Satisfactory completion in an ISP recognized forensic biology analysis training/testing program.
- Upon completion of relevant training, conduct forensic analysis on routine biological samples of limited complexity and difficulty utilizing approved Unit Test Methods.
- Work under the direction of a higher-level forensic scientist or supervisor including review of records.
- Communicate analytical procedures, methodology, policies, and conclusions to various elements in the criminal justice system including court testimony as an expert witness.
- Participate in a proficiency testing program.
- Assist in preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and safety equipment.
- Participate in continuing education and training programs in the analysis of biological samples.
- Comply with Standard Operating Procedures, Rules, Regulations, and Laboratory policies.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- Baccalaureate degree or higher in biology, chemistry, and/or forensic science which shall include a minimum of college credit in each of the following four subject areas: Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Statistics.
- Knowledge of theory and practical operation of various scientific instrumentation and analytical techniques.
- Ability to perform complex scientific procedures in an unbiased manner following the Unit Test Methods.
- Ability to comprehend, demonstrate, and explain knowledge of the theory and practical operation of various scientific instruments and analytical techniques.
- Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
- Ability to adhere to established laboratory safety practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to testify as an expert witness in an objective, unbiased, and professional manner.
- Must be able to differentiate colors as evidenced by medical certification.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Ability to travel by aircraft and other vehicles.
- Ability to attend training at alternate locations for extended periods of time.
