Job Description

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1986. POSITION SUMMARY:

Working under the general direction and supervision of the Deputy Director of Development and Director of Development, the Senior Grant Writer will manage and supervise the grant writing portfolio of new or existing programs. The Senior Grant Writer will work to further CHIRLA’s mission, vision, and strategic plan; increase and diversify CHIRLA’s portfolio of grants & contracts and lead a team of grant writers to research potential sources of funding to strategically support CHIRLA’s fundraising goals. The Senior Grant Writer is also responsible for the maintenance of grant and contract record keeping, strengthening and implementation of grant or contract systems, tools, & procedures, and assists with other development and fundraising activities.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of CHIRLA’s mission, strategic plan, programs, and initiatives and ability to effectively convey this information to current and prospective funders through grant proposals and reports.
  • Increase and diversify CHIRLA’s portfolio of grants and contracts by leading weekly and monthly strategic prospecting meetings to identify and review new prospect opportunities and assign grant opportunities to grant writers.
  • Responsible for confirming eligibility for new grant and contract opportunities.
  • Leads and supports grant writer(s) to achieve fundraising goals of CHIRLA’s general programs budget, CHIRLA Action Fund general programs budget, Capital Campaign and Data Center project.
  • Write and package accurate and compelling grant proposals and reports in collaboration with program and administrative staff, in accord with grant and contract submission deadlines.
  • In collaboration with Grant Writers and Development Coordinator, maintain up-to-date and well-organized grant records in both electronic and hard copy file formats.
  • Work with the Deputy Director of Development and Director of Development to grow relationships with funding prospects for opportunities to strategically support the organization.
  • Strengthen and implement grant and contract systems and procedures to ensure timely fulfillment of deadlines including providing enough time for internal review of deadlines before submission.
  • Engage and build collaborative, positive, effective relationships with funders, community partners, and internal staff and departments.
  • Assist with the full range of fund development and related activities as requested.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • At least five years of grant writing experience.
  • Must have strong writing skills and grant experience for private and public funders.
  • Experience working with and/or overseeing grant writers.
  • Must have the ability to work under tight deadlines, in a fast-paced environment, and be flexible when last-minute priorities arise.
  • Must be proficient with Word, Excel, Publisher, Power Point and other Microsoft Suite or other software utilized by CHIRLA.
  • Knowledge of and understanding of the philanthropy sector, local, state and federal funding systems.
  • Strong organizational skills as well as the ability to work and problem-solve under pressure.
  • Must be highly organized with the ability to work independently and multi-task.
  • Excellent attention to detail, accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups and populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity and inclusiveness.
Preferred
  • Master’s degree preferred, but not required
  • A professional and resourceful style, highly organized, detail oriented, with ability to take initiative, work independently, and cooperate in a team setting showing respect for all, and emotional maturity.
  • Previous experience supervising grant writers.
  • Experience collaborating with the philanthropy sector in local geographic area.
  • Ability to work in a team as well as lead a team
  • Must be able to work efficiently and manage multiple projects at once, which may be at different stages of design and execution
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to successfully relate to community residents.

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage deadlines and multiple   tasks effectively and efficiently.
  • Support CHIRLA’s fundraising goals including Annual Gala, Membership Drive, and   other fundraising activities.
  • Experience with immigrant community issues, C4 status, social justice and policy and   advocacy work is a plus
  • Familiar with the Los Angeles, SoCal and Californian’s Philanthropic Sector.

JOB TITLE : Senior Grant Writer

Salary & Benefits: $68,640 to $79,082. CHIRLA offers an excellent benefits package, which includes annual paid vacation; additional paid holiday leave in December; employer contribution to retirement account after six months of employment; health, dental, vision and life insurance plans.

FLSA Classification: Exempt/Salary, full-time

Classification:  CHIRLA recognizes a staff bargaining unit affiliated with AFSCME District Local 4501. This position is a management position and is not included in CHIRLA’s bargaining unit and covered under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

REPORT TO : Deputy Director of Development
