Job Description

Job Summary: Under direct/indirect supervision follows approved infection control, quality assurance and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible to train, direct, check, review, assign, organize, coordinate and reports the work performance of one (1) or more other Central Service Technicians or Sterile Processing Technicians. Collects, cleans, decontaminates, disinfects and/or sterilizes surgical instruments, trays and packs, reusable medical devices and patient care equipment for inpatient Nursing and Medical Office departments. Inventories, restocks and distributes instruments, reusable medical equipment and medical supplies to Medical Center. Works a majority of time in a Sterile Processing Department cleaning, preparing, assembling, sterilizing, prepare packs, instruments, and trays for the medical center and/or medical office building. Will process inpatient operating room instruments. Will assist in departmental inservices and training. Must hold current CS/SPD Certification with either the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or The International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management. Essential Responsibilities: + Infection Control - Standard Precautions: + Adherence to hand washing requirements, workflow patterns, standard precautions, sterility assurance, biological monitoring, and dress code. + Quality Assurance Monitoring: + Checks and validates event-related protocols; disinfection and/or sterilization load parameters and records; inventory check sheet(s); and equipment monitoring. + Documentation: + Meets regulatory requirements for sterilization, high level disinfection, biological monitoring, and employee competencies. Accurately document and maintain daily records of all QA and sterilization functions according to regulatory agency and Infection Control standards. + Policies and Procedures: + Adheres to Organizational and Departmental policies and procedures. + Staff Development: + Participates in department employee orientation (DEO), meetings, inservices and training, and employee evaluation and competency programs. Maintains current Sterile Processing Technician Certification. Attends internal and external classes for growth and development. + Decontamination Skills: + Wears personal protective equipment. Inspects, disassembles, sorts, cleans, and processes reusable instrumentation and equipment. Selects and operates specialized cleaning equipment. Follows manufacturer recommendations for use of cleaning agents. Follows device manufactures cleaning guidelines. Maintains adequate cleaning supplies. As designated reprocesses Endoscopes. + Trains personnel on: personal protective equipment, inspecting, disassembling, sorting, cleaning, and processing reusable instrumentation and equipment, selecting and operating specialized cleaning equipment, following manufacturer recommendations for use of cleaning agents, following device manufactures cleaning guidelines, maintaining adequate cleaning supplies, and reprocessing Endoscopes. + Instrumentation Assembly: + Identifies, inspects, assembles, all general and specialty instruments, various power equipment, laser and endoscopic instruments per specifications and manufacturer recommendations. + Trains personnel on identifying, inspecting, and assembling general and specialty instrumentation, various power equipment, laser and endoscopic instruments per specifications and manufacturer recommendations. + Preparation and Packaging: + According to manufacturer guidelines selects and prepares packaging materials for the sterilization of reusable instrumentation. Trains personnel on selecting and preparing packaging materials for sterilization of reusable instrumentation following manufacturer guidelines. + Principles of Sterilization + Selects appropriate method of sterilization. Maintains accurate sterilization records. Properly loads and unloads sterilization cart items. Verifies that sterilization parameters have been met before distribution of load. + Trains personnel to select appropriate method of sterilization. Trains personnel to maintain accurate sterilization records. Trains personnel to properly load and unload sterilization cart items. Trains personnel to verify that sterilization parameters have been met before distribution of load. + Equipment and Supply Management + Collect, clean, check, distribute, and track patient care equipment. As designated, order patient care equipment, inventory assigned supply areas for replenishment, and rotate supplies and stocks general and surgical carts. Report all malfunctioning equipment to appropriate department. + Trains personnel to collect, clean, check, distribute, and track patient care equipment. Trains personnel on ordering patient care equipment, inventorying assigned supply areas, rotating supplies, and stocking of general and surgical carts. Trains personnel to report all malfunctioning patient care equipment to appropriate department. + Workplace Safety + Demonstrates awareness of personal and work area safety all times. Complies with all facility safety policies and procedures, including those for bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases. Takes prompt corrective actions when hazard identified (reporting or removing, as appropriate). Attends required safety training. + Professionalism + Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills. Actively supports and contributes teamwork in the workplace. As designated or scheduled rotates through daily work assignments to assist and review the work of other technicians. Takes responsibility and is accountable for own professional work ethics. Demonstrate responsibility in adhering to posted work schedules. Assist in inservice and training. Supports departmental related computer programs. May assume interdepartmental liaison responsibilities. + Perform other related duties as necessary. + Supervisory Responsibilities: + This job motivates and provides work direction to other employees, but does not have the authority to hire, terminate, and conduct performance evaluations or discipline. Grade 455 Basic Qualifications: Experience + Must meet all the requirements of Certified Sterile Processing Technician II. + Must be able to train and report on the work performance of other employees as required. + Must be capable of performing all duties within the area of responsibility. + Must have a minimum of two (2) years current Sterile Processing experience. + Must be able to check all sterilization monitoring, record keeping, and quality assurance practices. + Must have effective oral and written communication skills with co-workers, internal, and external customers. + Must have departmental related computer skills + Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos. + Ability to write simple correspondence. + Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other incumbents of the organization. + Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment. + Also refer to Position Specifications outlined in the appropriate collective bargaining agreement Education + High School Diploma/GED.
