St. Paul Dairy Unit Assistant Manager

Position Overview The St. Paul Dairy Unit Assistant Manager reports directly to the St. Paul Dairy Unit Manager. This position is responsible for a variety of animal care and production and
operations functions designed to support the Departmentâ™s teaching, research and extension mission. The assistant manager assists the manager to recruit, schedule, and
supervise student employees working in the St. Paul dairy unit, coordinates use of the facilities by faculty, and attends to the operation and basic maintenance of equipment in
the dairy unit. This position will have the primary responsibility to oversee tasks related to milking parlor operations and calf management. As an essential employee, a portion of the
assistant managerâ™s time will be spent milking and feeding cows and caring for calves, sows and piglets, ewes and lambs and beef steers on the St. Paul Campus.
Responsibilities These examples do not include all possible tasks of this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this class. Percentages may vary based on time of year and needs of dairy. All tasks require appropriate use and operation of farm machinery and equipment, including operating a skidsteer. Documentation of activities and observations is required for
most tasks, especially in the dairy barn, to ensure animals receive appropriate and timely care (health observations and treatments, etc.) and to identify factors that could explain potential
problems (decreased performance, failure to conceive, etc.).
Supervision 25% - Hire, schedule, train, educate, evaluate, and retrain temp/casual, MAST and undergraduate employees.
- Plan and assign work, instruct employees in proper work methods and care of animals, and review their work by daily inspection of animal areas and by following up to see that chores
are done. - Communicate with full time farm animal attendants the daily plans and procedures.
Operational Management 45%
- Oversee and maintain sanitation of barns, pens, stalls, water tanks, feed mangers and other livestock facilities.
- Manage repairs on equipment and tools.
- Observe animals for general well being, health, and behavior on a routine basis and adjust procedures and administer treatments as required.
- Oversee management of milking parlor, including maintaining supply inventory, ensuring proper milking procedures are consistently followed, training milkers, coordinating routine service. May be needed to milk in unfilled shifts.
- Oversee management of calf facility, including maintaining supply inventory, arranging for schedule calf care and health, maintaining calf pens and hutches. May be needed to feed
calves in unfilled shifts. - Assume operational roles of the St. Paul Dairy Unit Manager during their absence and as directed by them.
- Assist St. Paul Dairy Unit Manager with operational tasks as assigned.
Animal Health and Care 30%
- Observe animals daily for abnormalities. Treat and care for animals and/or contact veterinarian for assistance according to site procedures. Assist veterinarian in treatment of
injuries and ailments and administer treatments, including intravenous therapies, as prescribed by veterinarian or supervisor. Record observations and all therapies administered. - Ear-tag, tattoo, or attach unique identifiers to livestock for identifications. Perform artificial insemination, castration, and collect blood samples for animals as required. Assist animals
during calving, lambing and farrowing. Record breeding, birth, and birthing information. - Prepare the parlor, milking equipment and cows for milking, milk the cows according to established procedures, ensure cow IDs and milk weights are captured correctly and stored electronically.
- Remove uneaten feed from the previous day from the feed mangers. Procure forage from silage bag and/or upright silo, prepare and deliver daily feed allotment to livestock by hand,
tractor, or feed mixer/feed wagon. Evaluate clean water supply for livestock. Clean and maintain watering system as needed. - Move cattle and livestock frequently within and between animal facilities.
Required Qualifications
- BA/BS degree plus two years of experience, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least six years.. Experience should be in the care of livestock.
- A valid Minnesota Driverâ™s License.
- Must be able to lift up to 120 1bs at a time and repeatedly lift 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
- General farm labor experience
- Experience in operating farm tractors and equipment
- Experience in milking, calf care, livestock handling, artificial insemination, administration of oral, intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous therapeutic medications, and collecting
blood samples from animals - Experience in record keeping
- Demonstrated aptitude for supervision and barn operation expectations
- Ability to interact well with people from diverse backgrounds
